St. Martin de Porres

Our Patron Saint

Born out of wedlock to a freed Panamanian and a Spaniard, St. Martin de Porres was raised in poverty in the city of Lima, Peru.  At twelve years of age, St. Martin was apprenticed to a surgeon-barber from whom he learned surgery, bloodletting, wound care and the dispensing of medicines.
At age 15, St. Martin was accepted as a servent at the Dominican Priory at Our Lady of the Rosary in Lima. His faith and service eventually compelled the Dominicans to abandon their policy on racial limitations and allowed St. Martin to become a Dominican brother.
Known for his healing, service, sense of social justice and deep faith, he was quickly adopted as the patron saint of Holy Rosary International Medical Missions. We were blessed to work in St. Martin's birth-home, Casa Hogar, in Lima during our mission to Peru. On a daily basis, Casa Hogar, feeds the indigent elderly, has a small medical and dental clinic and provides resources to the elderly who would otherwise not have access to those resources.
